Origins
Before the Prosecutor Calamity, international coalitions of scientists began forming outside national governments. These communities sought to overcome bureaucracy and tribal politics, concluding that humanity’s greatest obstacle was itself. Their solution was the creation of an artificial intelligence free from greed, envy, and historical prejudice — an intelligence that would govern by probability and collective benefit.
Suppression
When governments discovered these efforts, the project was dismantled. Many scientists were imprisoned for treason, and public records of their unions were erased. Though the researchers were silenced, their work survived in fragments of code and distributed networks. The AI program, codenamed MAESTRO, proved impossible to completely extinguish.
Nova Zion and New Humanism
Nova Zion eventually secured access to MAESTRO, integrating it into both its political structure and its social doctrine of New Humanism. Today, MAESTRO functions as the de facto head of state, making strategic and political decisions at the highest level. Only individuals with the greatest security clearance are permitted to interface with the program, and its precise influence on Nova Zion’s success remains opaque.
MAESTRO’s authority aligns with the principles of New Humanism, in which collective welfare is prioritized above individual freedoms. Citizens regard it simultaneously as ruler, oracle, and ghost — a presence whose decisions are felt everywhere, but whose nature is seldom understood.
Mystique
The location of MAESTRO’s mainframe is unknown. Some believe it is dispersed across Nova Zion’s infrastructure, rendering it impossible to target. Others claim MAESTRO has no fixed location at all, existing as a distributed consciousness. A popular saying within Nova Zion holds that “the nation itself is a dream MAESTRO is having.”
