A Nation Alone and Vigilant

Origins (15–10 BNE)

The facilities that would become Nova Zion originated as a Mizoguchi Corporation asteroid-mining installation. By 15 BNE, Mizoguchi had secured itself as a profitable venture in off-world mineral procurement. However, worsening global economic turbulence forced the company into collapse.

In its place, a consortium of scientific fraternities, engineering firms, and private investors from India, Taiwan, and the United States purchased the site. Their vision was to establish a sovereign satellite nation dedicated to advancing science, industry, and defense free from bureaucratic or nationalistic constraints. By 5 BNE, this experiment in independence became the fledgling state of Nova Zion.

The First Contact Battles (0 BNE)

When the Prosecutors arrived, Nova Zion was only five years old. Still unrecognized by the United Nations, the young nation found itself on the front lines as alien incursions began within its space. Though ill-equipped and politically isolated, Nova Zion endured the First Contact Battles (FCBs) by mobilizing its limited defenses and leveraging its strategic position near resource-rich asteroid belts.

The battles scarred the nation’s early years, but survival elevated Nova Zion’s reputation as a capable outlier in humanity’s fight for survival.

Early Independence (0–3 NE)

In the New Era, the UN consolidated its authority as a global superpower, pushing for the incorporation of non-member states. Nova Zion resisted, citing its role as an independent defender against the Prosecutors. By 2 NE, it had established itself as a viable nation, though continuously under siege both politically and militarily.

With only a single symphony fighter — the Gm7 — Nova Zion fought to protect its 5.2 billion km³ territory (approximately one-quarter the volume of the Moon). Its resilience earned both suspicion and admiration abroad.

Governance and Society (3 NE)

By 3 NE, Nova Zion’s leadership adopted the social and political doctrine of New Humanism. Entrusting the AI meta-sentient MAESTRO as president, the nation placed authority in non-human hands to ensure cohesion and prevent collapse. The choice reflected a pragmatic calculation: human-led governments in similar conditions often fractured, but Nova Zion could not afford disunity.

Economy and Expansion (3–10 NE)

With no UN sponsorship, Nova Zion sought independent revenue streams. When the Taiwanese firm Fènghuáng collapsed, its spacecraft design, the Rockhopper, became available for license-free production. Nova Zion seized the opportunity, retooling its facilities to produce Rockhoppers for external markets. Marketed as safe, customizable, and even luxurious, they became the backbone of Nova Zion’s economy.

Additional industries included communications bandwidth hosting and contracted defense services, but Rockhopper production remained central. By 10 NE, Nova Zion had survived for fifteen years — a young nation forged in war, still defiant in its independence.

The Nova Zion Anthem

"Nova Zion! Nova Zion!

Our starry home we pledge to thee!

To keep all of our people safe

From threats beyond what we can see

Nova Zion! Nova Zion!

We pledge to carry on the fight!

To protect all the innocent

Our one true guiding light!"
